Patient Preparation Guidelines for Holter Electrocardiogram (ECG) Monitoring

 

Before the procedure:

  • The patient must take a shower prior to the procedure (exposure to water is not permitted after device placement).
  • The chest area must be clean and dry (no creams, lotions, or ointments should be applied).
  • For optimal electrode adhesion, chest hair removal may be required in male patients.
  • The patient must inform the physician about all medications currently being taken (do not discontinue any medication without medical advice).

During the procedure:

  • Removal or exposure of the device to water is strictly prohibited.
  • Maintenance of normal daily activities is recommended, in agreement with the physician.
  • The patient must keep a diary including:
    1. Symptoms (chest pain, palpitations, dizziness, shortness of breath)
    2. Time of occurrence and type of activity
    3. Restrictions:
  • Avoid strong electromagnetic fields (e.g., MRI)

Patient preparation before the procedure:

  • A valid echocardiography report must be provided.
  • The report is considered valid if performed within the last 1 month.
  • It is recommended to bring recent medical documentation issued by the treating cardiologist (including primary diagnoses and prescribed medications).
  • The patient should refrain from food intake for 3–4 hours prior to the test (water intake is allowed).
  • The patient should avoid the following for 48 hours prior to the procedure:
    • alcohol
    • energy drinks
  • Comfortable clothing and footwear are recommended.
  • Temporary discontinuation of certain medications (e.g., beta-blockers) is allowed only upon physician’s instruction (self-discontinuation is strictly prohibited).

Inform the physician about:

  • any history of cardiovascular disease
  • issues related to arterial blood pressure
  • all medications currently being taken

During the procedure:

The patient must immediately inform medical staff if experiencing:

  • chest pain
  • severe shortness of breath
  • dizziness
  • generalized weakness
